WhatsTrading Recap - 01/26/2015

Mixed Monday as the S&P 500 clings to a modest 3-point gain. Overall volumes are light due the Blizzard along the Northeast coast and are likely to tape off even further as players hit the exits early in the final hour.

Treasury bonds see lifeless action with no data to guide trading and the yield on the benchmark ten-year sits at 1.83%. Crude oil is off 40 cents to $45.20 and gold gave up $12.50 to $1280.

Yet, energy (XLE) is the best performing sector today. Consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF), and healthcare (XLV) are also winning. Utilities (XLU), industrials (XLI), and tech (XLK) are under water.

With 90 minutes left to trade, 4.85 million calls and 4.4 million puts traded across the 12 options exchanges. The projected volume for the day is 11.5 million contracts and the lowest so far in 2015.

CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is dipping below 16 and is also on pace to close at its lowest levels so far this year.

Among individual tickers seeing flow today, Caterpillar (CAT) puts are heavily traded ahead of earnings. The Dow component is due to reporttomorrow and more than 11,000 Weekly (1/30) 83 puts traded on the stock. Feb 80 and 85 puts are the next most actives in CAT.

In fact, it’s the busiest week for Q4 2014 profit reports so a lot of options activity will be surrounding these events. Microsoft (MSFT), Coach (COH), and AK Steel (AKS) are also seeing active trading ahead of their profit reports.

Interestingly, Chevron (CVX) is the best gainer in the Dow today ahead of its 1/30 earnings report.  The stock is up 2% despite another drop in crude oil today.

However, earnings from Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT), as well as Wednesday’s FOMC meeting, are likely to garner more interest than Chevron once the storm clouds lift over the Northeast in the week ahead.
