Top 3 Super Bowl Ads And The 3 Stocks Behind Them

Like every year, there are some great Super Bowl ads to see.  This year’s ads seemed to make a point of addressing pressing issues.  These three Super Bowl ad stocks made our list because of the powerful messages they send emphasizing the human potential, importance of family bonds (and that they shouldn’t be taken for granted), as well as promoting positive gender messages.  On our list we have P&G (PG - Analyst Report), Toyota (TM - Analyst Report), and Nissan (NSANY).

Toyota (TM

Toyota’s “How Great I Am” ad showed Paralympian Amy Purdy in a montage where she accomplishes tasks at a level most people could only dream of doing.  She snowboards down a mountain, runs, dances, and models at a high level.

All this is done with the voice of Muhammad Ali in the background, saying strong metaphors like “I hospitalized a brick, I’m so mean I make medicine sick”.  This inspirational ad sends a message of overcoming boundaries and that there is no limit to the potential of each of us to be great, hoping that you will feel the same about the new Toyota Camry.

Toyota (TM - Analyst Report) is up about 1.74% in trading today, with a current Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).  The Q4 earnings are to be reported tomorrow, 2/3/15.

Proctor & Gamble (PG)

Proctor & Gamble (PG - Analyst Report) makes known a negative view in our society on the female gender which most tend to conform to.  In the ad, directors tell actors to do things “like a girl”.  The actors, both males and females at or past puberty, then proceed to act out feminine stereotypes associated with the gender.  This includes flapping arms around as they run, slapping with both hands when told to fight like a girl, etc.

However, the ad then takes young girls around 10 or younger and asks them to do things “like a girl”.  At this point the young ladies proceed to do the actions without conforming to gender stereotypes, aware that their potential is just as high as the opposite gender.  The ad ends by promoting the hashtag #LikeAGirl by saying that girls tend to lose their confidence during puberty.

Proctor & Gamble is currently a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).  The company gives out a 3.05% dividend, and has an earnings date 4/22/15.

Nissan (NSANY)

Nissan’s 90 second ad “With Dad” is one that makes us appreciate our parents and family more. Throughout the ad, the dad, a Formula 1 racecar driver is seen raising his child from the time his son is a new born to when he’s well into high school.  What makes the ad so emotional is the fact that in this whole time that spans the son’s life, the father is a racecar driver, but even more so, a loving father.

In the middle of the ad he has a brutal accident in his F1 vehicle, but of course his Nissan saves him.  The mom and her son still worry about dad, but throughout the years he manages to make it home safe.  The ad ends by showing the dad picking up his son from school, nearly in tears as he is grateful to be able to hold his son in his arms.  What vehicle would be more appropriate in this Super Bowl ad than to preview the 2016 Nissan Maxima!  Car enthusiasts are now speculating what unique and innovative features the unreleased car has.

Nissan (NSANY) is currently a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).  The stock gives out a 2.73% dividend.  The car company has an earnings report on 2/9/15.

Bottom Line

It is hard to say what impact the positive buzz from these ads will have on the aforementioned companies, and especially in terms of sales. However, the positive brand association may be more of a long-term play by these companies, so it will be interesting to see if these ads have staying power and if the trio of companies above can capitalize off of this big advertising investment over the long haul.
