The Internet: Brought To You, In Part, By Adtran

This week I'm seeking a prestigious and long-term dividend-paying stock from the technology business sector.

That technology sector has nineteen industries ranging from communication equipment, computers, consumer electronics, and contract manufacturing, to health and information technology and services to internet, scientific instruments, software, solar and all such technological marvels.

Today I'm reviewing a small-cap communication equipment company, named Adtran Inc. Its trading ticker symbol is ADTN

Adtran Inc is engaged in providing networking and communications equipment. Its products enable voice, data, video and Internet communications across a variety of network infrastructures, worldwide.

The company operates through two segments, Network Solutions and Services & Support.

It offers access and aggregation solutions, including network management and subscriber services control and orchestration software within an SD-access architecture; SDN-controlled programmable network elements.

The company's access and aggregation solutions also comprise cabinet and outside-plant enclosures and services.

In addition, it provides customer devices comprising broadband customer premise solutions.

Further, the company offers time division multiplexed and asynchronous transfer mode based aggregation systems and customer devices.

The company serves communications service providers, distributed enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses, public and private enterprises, and individual users.

Adtran, Inc. was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama.

I use three key data points to gauge the value of any dividend equity or fund like Adtran Inc. (ADTN):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, four more keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest.

But those first three primary keys, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

ADTN Price

Adtran's price per share was $14.06 at yesterday's market close. A year ago its price was $20.85 for a price drop of $6.79 per share for the year, that's an 33% loss.

Assuming Adtran's price will trade in the range of $10 to $24 next year, Adtran's recent $14.06 price could improve by $4.44 to $18.50 by early-November, 2019.

ADTN Dividends

Adtran's most recent quarterly dividend was $0.09 declared October 16th and payable November 14th.

At this most recent $0.09 quarterly rate, Adtran's annual dividend equals $0.36 yielding 2.56% at yesterday's closing $14.06 price.

Gains For ADTN?

Adding the $0.36 estimated annual dividend to my estimated $4.44 annual price upside for Adtran Inc. (ADTN) makes a $4.80 potential gross annual per share gain, which will be reduced by costs to trade the shares.

A little under $1,000.00 invested today at the $14.06 recent price buys 71 Adtran Inc. (ADTN) shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale costs $0.14 per share, subtracting that $0.14 brokerage cost from the estimated $4.80 gross annual gain leaves a net gain of $4.66 X 71 shares = $330.86 for a 33% net gain on a $998.26 investment.

Therefore, Adtran Inc. whose trading ticker symbol is ADTN, now shows a possible 33% net gain including a 2.56% dividend yield.

Seven brokers cover this stock:

One says "buy" Adtran.

One thinks Adtran will "outperform" its peers.

Five say "hold" Adtran.

The consensus number is 2.57 or "hold".

Broker price targets are $2 lower than the $18.50 upside I suggested as possible.

Therefore, you may see these speculative numbers this way, Adtran Inc., whose trading ticker symbol is ADTN, has made money, is making money, and could net a 15% to 33% net annual gain including a 2.56% dividend yield.

It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to determine if Adtran Inc (ADTN) is worth your time and money.
