Box Office Battle: Polynesian Princess 'Moana' Tops $81M In Thanksgiving Weekend

Disney's (DIS) "Moana" earned $55.5M in its U.S. debut over the November 27 three-day weekend for a total of $81.1M over the extended holiday period, nearly beating estimates of $85M. The film, a Polynesian-themed animated feature starring the voices of Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, received an A in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds a 98% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $150M. In a limited international release, "Moana" took $16.3M.

Box Office Runners-Up 

Time Warner's (TWX) "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them" added $45.1M over the three-day and $65.8M over the five-day, outpacing estimates of $58M. In foreign markets, the Harry Potter spinoff earned $132M.

Taking third place, Disney's "Doctor Strange" grossed a respective $13.4M and $18.9M over the three and five-day periods, reaching a cumulative global haul of $616M in its fourth weekend.

Viacom (VIA) newcomer "Allied" debuted at a respective $13M and $18M against expectations for $25M. The Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard-led World War II thriller was scored B in CinemaScore polls and holds a RottenTomatoes rating of 61%.

Rounding out the top five, Viacom's sci-fi drama "Arrival" added $11.2M and $15.6M in its third weekend. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Sony (SNE), Lionsgate (LGF), and Comcast (CMCSA).
