Box Office Battle: 'Moana,' 'Fantastic Beasts' Win Post-Thanksgiving Weekend

Disney's (DIS) "Moana" topped the U.S. box office in its second week of release, earning $28.4M over the December 4 weekend against estimates of $26M. The Polynesian-themed animated film dipped about 49% from its debut, as compared to the roughly 32% second-weekend drop of the studio's last feature, "Zootopia." In foreign markets, "Moana" took $32M.

Box Office Runners-Up

Time Warner's (TWX) "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them" added $18.5M in its third weekend, landing near the mid-point of expectations for $16M-$21M. With the help of $60.4M from international tickets this weekend, the Harry Potter spinoff has now reached a global total of just under $608M. Meanwhile, Viacom's (VIA) sci-fi drama "Arrival" and World War II thriller "Allied" grossed $7.3M and $7M, respectively.

Rounding out the top five, Disney's "Doctor Strange" earned $6.5M in its fifth weekend. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Sony (SNE), Fox (FOX), Lionsgate (LGF), and Comcast (CMCSA).
