Drink Less Water

“You should drink more water,” my friend told me.

It’s a running joke among my friends that I drink too little water. Most times, when we are rock climbing, they’ll drink several bottles of water before I’ve even taken a single sip.

Some people believe that drinking water is critical to health. And they’ll drink water all day, all the time.

For me, I drink water occasionally, usually when I’m thirsty … and that’s it.

That’s the way it’s been from the time I was a kid.

“Drink water all the time” is the kind of one-size-fits-all view of health that is often based on nothing more than belief, hearsay, junk science and companies’ marketing campaigns.

However, there’s a revolution brewing that is going to completely wipe out these kinds of one-size-fits-all health care beliefs.

Drink Less Water

This revolution is called precision medicine. At its simplest, precision medicine is the use of our genetic information, or genomes, in combination with our medical history.

Together, these two things are going to make diagnosing medical conditions more precise. That way, when you go to see the doctor, you don’t simply get some one-size-fits-all hokum like “drink more water” that may be true for some and false for many others.

Instead, a doctor will match your symptoms against a massive database that looks to precisely target what you have.

You will also be given a genetic diagnostic test that confirms this diagnosis. And finally, you’ll be prescribed a drug or treatment that precisely targets your individual symptoms.

No more one-size-fits-all health care. Now, medicine is going to be individual, personal and precise.

Health Care Giants

This revolution in precision medicine is going to completely and utterly upend the health care industry. Many of today’s big health care giants — companies such as Pfizer and Merck that many of you own because of their long track record of profitability and consistent dividends —are going to be destroyed. That’s because these companies built themselves on the back of the old version of health care … one that depends on the imprecision of “one size fits all” for their success.
