So the US economy is smoking hot. The new American administration is going to focus on unbridled enterprise, and promote oil – creating a reality I saw in the charts a few months ago, but couldn’t quite believe. I titled the piece A New Bull Market in Oils? Why the question mark? Because, as an Albertan, I could barely believe what the charts were telling me!

Well, at this writing the news is that America’s Federal Reserve has raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point – only the second increase in a decade. Fed Chair Janet Yellen signalled a faster pace of increases next year. The thinking is that the Trump administration will promote growth through tax cuts, spending and deregulation.

All this makes me glad I bought some of Wisdom Tree’s Wisdom Tree Europe Hedged Equity Fund (HEDJ) a week ago. Here’s a link to a fact sheet which explains the fund. You need to take a look at it yourself; it is difficult to explain in detail in a single short column. The bottom line, however, is that this investment enables the investor to

• gain exposure to broad Eurozone equity from dividend-paying companies with an exporter tilt;
• mitigate exposure to fluctuations of the euro; and
• maintain Eurozone equity exposure while neutralizing currency movements of the euro relative to the U.S. dollar

There was some hesitation with this investment today, as the market waited for the Fed to speak. As the chart shows, however, last week the fund set a 12-month high. Further, this fund is well below the highs of previous years, suggesting that this puppy may still have room to run.
