Tech Talk: Are They Overbought Yet?

The three charts above are five-year pictures of the S&P 500 index (top), the Nasdaq (middle), and Toronto’s S&P index (bottom). In recent weeks, all three have shattered their previous all-time records. Is this likely to continue?

I’m optimistic by nature. In addition, it’s likely that, in the gong show taking place south of the Canadian border, the new Administration will greatly reduce corporate taxes, boosting share performance. Optimistic I may be, but I do think it’s important to be cautious. I’ve therefore begun to shift some of my money out of North America, into ETFs in the developing world.

One such is EEM, which provides “broad, market-cap-weighted exposure to over 800 large- and mid-cap stocks across 23 emerging markets,” according to its manager. Here’s a picture of the investment, with my annotations:

The other one, EPI, is focused on India and comes from Wisdom Tree. According to its manager, the company designed this product to “track the investment results of profitable companies in the Indian equity market.” Here’s what it looks like:

You will notice that neither breakout seems definitive, so you may want to just wait and see. Myself, I think the risk is worth it.
