'Star Trek Beyond' Tops Box Office With $60M, 'Ice Age' Stumbles
Viacom's (VIA) "Star Trek Beyond" earned $59.6M in its U.S. debut over the July 24 weekend, outperforming expectations for $55M-$59M but dipping 15% from the $70M open of 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness." In foreign markets, the film took $30M. The third entry in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise received an A- in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds an 84% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $185M.

Beating forecasts of $26M, Comcast's (CMCSA) "The Secret Life Of Pets" grossed $29.3M in its third week for a cumulative domestic total of $261M. Sharing third place, Time Warner (TWX) horror film "Lights Out" debuted at $21.6M on a budget of just $4.9M, while Sony's (SNE) "Ghostbusters" also earned $21.6M.
Rounding out the top five, Fox's (FOX) "Ice Age: Collision Course," the fifth installment in the "Ice Age" animated series, opened at $21M against expectations for $26M-$30M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Disney (DIS) and Lionsgate (LGF).
