Monday Update: Global Roundup

1) Our "Scottish shares", preferred guaranteed by the government of the United Kingdom, have jumped on the Scottish referendum results. In fact they were not affected either by secession or by the currency, as they are US$ denominated. But I take the goodies I can get.

2) Another big event last week was the arrival of Alibaba. This has boosted Tencent and its part parent Naspers, TCTZF and NPSNY. I am not yet ready to sell thes either as I fear the magic lamp may not prove as solid as the older Hong Kong and South Africa listed ways to play China. Tencent is a new 2-bagger.

3) I have been forced by our rules limited how much we can invest to find some sells, and decided that we will exit some of our big gainers, notably Schlumberger Ltd, a potential victim of sanctions against Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and his oligbarchic buddies. SLB while Dutch will not violated US-EU sanctions. It is not a pirate company but one run by most respectable French Protestants. So we are selling half, and since this is a double position (we averaged down) it is not going to change our performance.

FYI I have owned this share since 1966 and have periodically dipped into my gains for things like buying real estate.

4) We also sell Coca Cola Hellenic, now listed in London, in part because it too is a best-seller in Russia, the very image of Western hipness. It is also harder to trade or track in Amerika.

5) And Liberty Global A now that it is zipping in Ziggy is another to reduce.

6) I miss Cecilia Gondar already. The Herzfeld Caribbean Fund (CUBAS) whose back office she used to run has failed to calculate its net asset value last week. There is no excuse, as Tom Herzfeld, who owns the fund management company, is also the one providing Barron's with this data for its Monday-dated issue. It is not given a free pass like Jardine Fleming China Fund which is irrelevant to the fortunes of JPMorgan-Chase which operates the fund out of Hong Kong mainly for Britons. CUBA is run from Miami and even if the beach is tempting, one of the staffers from the Clan Herzfeld needs to work out the NAV every week.
