Canadian Housing Starts Increased Sharply In June
Canada’s housing starts recovered sharply in June, advancing at a hefty 248.1 thousand units from 193.9 thousand units in May. It was the strongest start level in seven months, as multiple urban starts surged 46.4% and urban starts grew 29.9%.
This month's increases were concentrated in Ontario, with the province's starts increasing nearly 100% from May levels.
Six other provinces posted increases in starts, including Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. On the other hand, monthly declines in starts s were recorded in British Columbia, Alberta), and Saskatchewan.
As a National Bank report indicates, multi-unit starts were the highest on record for a month of June since data collection began in 1990, with most of the increase concentrated in Toronto.
Despite the strong rebound in starts in June, housing construction is still set to subtract from Canadian GDP growth in the second quarter.
